Padova: Historic City

Padua is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in Italy and has been repeatedly named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The most recent recognition came in the summer of 2021 with the title of Urbs Picta, referring to the 14th-century fresco cycle distributed across various sites in the city.

The frescoes were created between 1302 and 1397 and can be found in the famous Scrovegni Chapel, the Palazzo della Ragione, the Basilica of Saint Anthony, the Carraresi Palace, the Church of the Eremitani, as well as in smaller and lesser-known places such as the Baptistery of the Cathedral, the Oratory of Saint George, and the Oratory of Saint Michael.

Just outside the structure, we can stroll through the beautiful Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza della Frutta, or enjoy a good espresso at the renowned Caffé Pedrocchi, admired and envied around the world. For those who love spirits, the famous “Spritz” aperitif can be enjoyed while observing the astronomical clock in Piazza dei Signori.

Continuing our walk, we can admire the beautiful Scrovegni Chapel, with Giotto’s masterpiece frescoes, the Basilica of Saint Anthony, in Romanesque-Gothic style, the 16th-century city walls, one of the most extensive in Italy, the Palazzo del Bò, which hosted Dante, Petrarch, and Galileo, the famous Botanical Garden (also a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the Basilica of Santa Giustina, built on ancient paleo-Christian catacombs.

Our “walk” would not be complete without visiting the “Isola Memmia”, the central part of Prato della Valle, one of the symbols of Padua. It is a large elliptical square, which, besides being the largest square in Padua, is one of the largest in Europe (88,620 sqm), second only to Red Square in Moscow.

For nature lovers and excursion enthusiasts, we cannot fail to mention the proximity to the Euganean Hills and the beautiful medieval towns of Arquà Petrarca, Este, and Montagnana.

A few kilometers from Venice

Just a 30-minute train ride away is Venice with St. Mark’s Square, the most beautiful living room in the world; Murano, where you can visit the glassworks that make Venice’s glass art production one of the most renowned, and Burano, famous for its lace and embroidery.

TYPICAL VENETO CUISINE Al Ghetto

Osteria L’Anfora

One of the most classic dishes of Veneto cuisine is bigoli alla gallina imbriagata, in which the meat has been marinated for a long time before being cooked. There are not many places where this dish is made to perfection, but you will find it at Osteria L’Anfora, in the heart of the ghetto. A small restaurant, few places, and a constantly changing menu. Polentine, pasta and beans, bigoli, guinea fowl, cold cuts, but also some vegetarian options. There is also a worthy conclusion with home-made desserts.

Bacaro Padovano

Where better to find traditional cuisine than in a bacaro? Well yes, at the Bacaro Padovano, in addition to cicchetti and aperitifs you can enjoy all the delicacies of our cuisine. The raw materials used come mainly from the Padua area and contribute to a menu that varies weekly. Some appetising ideas? Gallina in saor, soppressa, folpetti, and of course bigoli (the ones with white meat sauce are particularly good), cuttlefish and salt cod. Their spring and vegetarian version of carbonara, with white and green asparagus, is also excellent. A glass of wine or a nice beer and dinner (except on Tuesdays) slips away beautifully.

Osteria Nane della Giulia

Dinner at grandma’s house, with the lights dimmed and the dishes lovingly prepared from the garden. This is a bit like the atmosphere at Nane dalla Giulia. Here the menu continues to be hand-written and offers dishes that vary from time to time, in keeping with what is on the market in Padua. Traditional classics, however, are never lacking. Sarde in saor, baccalà (salt cod) or the famous white ragu of the court. A world of other times, almost magical, where you cannot end with one of their desserts. Don’t forget to book!

FOR EXCELLENT PIZZA AND MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE

Ristorante Pizzeria Marechiaro

Ristorante Pizzeria Marechiaro was founded in Padua in 1964 by Federico Mandara and his wife Aurora Mandara from Tramonti (Salerno), a small town on the Amalfi Coast. With its more than 60 years of activity, Marechiaro has been awarded the title of ‘historic Veneto restaurant’ and is in the imagination of Paduans the pizzeria par excellence in the historic centre. Federico left us in 2017, but his sons, Giovanni and Giulio continue the business with the passion and love for this work passed down from their parents.
